FreeVIEW®

Data Acquisition Software

FreeVIEW is a free of charge Scope recorder / Chart recorder / Data logger / Sampler application with additional analyzing capabilities that can be used with:
  • PCMCIA (PC-) Cards:  DAQ i108, DAQ i116, DAQ i148, DAQ i250, DAQ i508, DAQ i516, DAQ i608, DAQ i616 and the corresponding  multifunction cards (-MF suffix).
  • PCI cards: DAQ pci108, DAQ pci116, DAQ pci148, DAQ pci250, DAQ pci508, DAQ pci616 and the corresponding  multifunction cards (-MF suffix).
  • 16 bit sound cards. Click here for description and download of the FreeVIEW sound software.
FreeVIEW is intended for people who don't want or need to program their own applications and just want to capture and analyze captured data now or later. It is also a great tool for verifying analog input data in comparison to self-written programs.

With its multi-channel display, dependencies and relationships of channels to each other become clear. Screen hardcopy is implemented too. This works fine even with monochrome printers, because identification signs, color and line type for each graph can be set.

It works perfectly with Ines data acquisition PC-Cards and PCI cards and all sound cards that have 16 bit resolution.

FreeVIEW supports - as the whole data acquisition card series - the operating systems Microsoft Windows® 95/98, Windows NT® and Windows® 2000.

By using this free software, a PC-Card and the unique SRA-1 strain-relief assembly kit, a reliable portable data acquisition system can be assembled using a standard notebook. A ruggedized notebook with ISA bay is not required.

Using the sound card driver a "no cost" solution exists - not only including data capture - but also  providing waveform analysis!

Nothing else is needed for a portable data acquisition system for long time or high speed recording applications.

FreeVIEW® plus

is an extended version of FreeVIEW®. The FreeVIEW plus version for sound cards is included in the free of charge FreeVIEW sound software package. Check it out! Remember to rename the extension to .exe after download.

Using data acquisition cards, for little charge you get data analyzing capability, that allows you to manipulate the data stretch by direct formula input. This can be done in real-time in the Online Display window and offline on stored data. The result is shown in a separate window. Up to 8 windows can be opened. Each formula takes advantage of the rich set of built-in functions and can be as long as 32 lines.
See the next section for a detailed list of additional features in FreeVIEW plus. Request an offer for FreeVIEW plus.

Features of FreeVIEW® and FreeVIEW® plus

In the following list "+" signs stand for features available in FreeVIEW plus only. All other features are available in FreeVIEW as well!
  • FreeVIEW consists of a these applications:
    • Oscilloscope: Online display, shows directly captured data with trigger. Storage mode without trigger also available.
    • Data logger: Writes data directly to disk for high speed operation without display.
    • Offline display shows data that was written to disk in binary. Data reduction/compression methods available as well for viewing large amounts of data.
    • (+) Chart recorder for low speed recording up to 5kHz. Shows data while it is captured.
    • (+) Data analyzer: Data or signal post processing using simple text-based formula input. Extension to the Offline Display. Result is shown again in XY graph window. 8 formulas/graph windows, called "virtual channels", available. Without entering a formula, 8 separate graph displays plus the main display window exist that can be scrolled/zoomed independent of each other.
  • Designed for Microsoft Windows® 95/98/ME, Windows NT® and Windows® 2000 operating systems.
  • Stand-alone application, does not need installed programming language or additional application.
  • Works with huge files up to 2GByte size, that is equivalent to 1073 million samples.
  • Space-saving data storage, only two byte for one data point needed.
  • GUI based, 800x600 screen resolution minimum required, 1280x1024 recommended for data analyzer. 1600x1200 points needed for showing all displays without overlap.
  • Works with up to 8 channels at once (out of a set of 16 channels if a 16 channel card is used)
  • Zooming and panning implemented.
  • Two markers in the display area for easy measurement and event identification.
  • (+) Up to 8 virtual channels: Data of one or multiple input channels is preprocessed by user-defined formula and shown. There are lots of applications for these virtual channels: Conversion of physical units, for example, if thermocouple elements are used, or power calculation of two channels voltage and current, spectrum analysis, data filtering, only to give a few examples.
Overview of implemented functions and operators (the complete set is much larger!) :
    • Arithmetic: + - * /
    • Number: floor() ceil() round() intPart() fracPart()
    • Logical: and or not
    • Comparison: = < > <= >=
    • Logarithmic and exponential: sq() sqrt() exp() exp10() log() log10()
    • Trigonometric: sin() cos() tan() sinh() cosh() tanh() asin() acos() atan() asinh() acosh() atanh() cot() acot() acoth()
    • Polynomial: poly()
    • Derivate and integral: defIntegral(), derivat()
    • Signal processing: fft() ifft() xcorrelate()
    • Window functions for signal processing: bartlett() hamming() hanning() blackman()
  • (+) Virtual channels 7 and 8 offer 3 markers for precise measurement in the graph.
  • Displays up to 65000 points per channel and more, depending on RAM and computer speed.
  • Data reduction methods for accessing and displaying very large amounts of data:
    • Skip: data in between in skipped, only every N-th point is shown. N ranges from 2 to 32768.
    • Min/Max: A data pair is calculated from a block of N points. The pair indicate minimum and maximum value of the data set.
    • Mean: The arithmetic mean value of N data points is calculated and shown.
  •  (+) Separate displays for input and virtual channels.
  • Shows current computer's load. Issues warning messages if load is too high.
  • Supports all card's features:
    • Trigger capability
    • All input voltage ranges
    • Differential inputs
  • Print Screen facility. Also usable with monochrome printers because different point types (signs) can be set.
  • ASCII data export directly from main display window: Formatted numbers in real data format are written to disk. Data can be post processed with all major applications.

FreeVIEW Plus

Applications

  • Long-time recording of up to eight analog input channels. Using the data logger, data is written to disk continuously. For example, at 10.000 data points per second, up to 28 hours can be recorded! Later, the data can be loaded into the Offline Display and being analyzed. Interesting stretches can also be exported in ASCII format for post processing by other applications. In addition, a hardcopy of the graphs can be performed.
  • High-speed recording. With aid of the fast data acquisition cards, i.e. the DAQ i508, data can be written at high speeds, up to 500.000 data points per second, to disk.
  • Event detection. Using the card's trigger capabilities, it can be waited for an event on one input channel. The data after, at, and before the event can be either shown or written to disk.
  • Digital oscilloscope. Using a DAQ i608 PCMCIA, signals up to 300kHz can be viewed and stored. At lower speeds, the multiple channel display gives you more flexibility than a classic 2 channel oscilloscope. Anyway, the resolution of 12 bit outperforms the 8 bit of many digital oscilloscopes.
  • FFT analyzer: Using one or more virtual channels, a FFT of one or more input signals can be shown while data is captured. Using a DAQ i608, signals up to 300kHz can be measured.
  • Audio analyzer: Using a DAQ i148, a two channel analyzer with FFT capability up to 150kHz is available.

Exemplary system configuration, capable of 100kHz sample rate

"No cost" system configuration, capable of capturing 2 channels at 48kHz sample rate

The wide range of available data acquisition cards and complementary products allow customization for specific application needs.

Questions regarding FreeVIEW and FreeVIEW sound

Q: Where can I find references to FreeVIEW and FreeVIEW sound? Are there any articles in magazines published?
Yes, FreeVIEW has been reviewed in the german magazines "ct 14/2001", "PC-Welt 8/2001" (these two included shareware CDs containing the software). There is also an article about FreeVIEW and data acquisition using sound cards in the "elektronik industrie 8/2001".

Q: Every time I press the "Export" button in the Online (or Offline) window, there should be data exported. But nothing happens. What's wrong?
There's nothing wrong. The "Export" button works in a different manner:
The button controls if ASCII data is written or not at the time of the display update. So if data is shown and you press Export, at first nothing happens. Each
time a display update takes place, the new data is written to the files. The intention of this method is that you can access the file data using a second
application in parallel to running FreeVIEW.

Q: I want to capture data, process it and output the modified data again. Is an extended version planned that can take advantage of the analog outputs?
No, there are currently no plans to support it directly in FreeVIEW. The processing requires real-time capabilities of the program for the delay between input and output must not become too high. The delay is highly dependent on the operations performed on the data stream. There are a lot of other issues to address like block sizes, scaling and so on. FreeVIEW is intended to be a simple to use application - no programming language and no graphical toolkit for signal processing.

This area is left for own programs that can handle these issues much better than a general application. Of course it is possible to use wave input and output simultaneously. For using the analog outputs (wave output) the full version FreeVIEW sound pro is mandatory.
